A Whirlwind Journey: LEGO® Brick-Based Therapy and Beyond

Last week, I had an incredible adventure that left me buzzing with inspiration and gratitude. I completed the Play Included®, Brick-by-Brick® program (a LEGO Foundation partner) advanced facilitation training, an internationally-acclaimed LEGO® brick-based therapy; founded by Dr. Gina Gómez de la Cuesta and Dr. Elinor Brett .

Carnegie Mellon University's Training hub for Brick-by-Brick® Programming, equips education professionals to support children's development and personal wellbeing in schools and community settings.

Zephrine reflects on an inspiring day spent learning about LEGO facilitation. Zephrine also touches on personal growth, the importance of believing in oneself, and reconnecting with family.

36 Hours of Magic

The trip was nothing short of amazing. In a whirlwind 36 hours, I connected with like-hearted individuals (a phrase I borrowed from Charlynda Scales of Mutt's Sauce) across various intersections of my life. From art and farming to LEGO builds and innovative entrepreneurship hubs, from transformative play to high school homeschool and enrichment programs, the experience was rich and diverse.

Serendipitous Meet-up

While exploring the city, I had a chance meeting with the "Fabulous 6" living their best “Rich Aunties Sunday Funday” lives. We hung out and snapped a picture, setting the perfect vibe for my trip. I felt the ancestors with me! Ase

TransformED at Allegheny Intermediate Unit

A heartfelt thank you goes out to John and Sarah for facilitating their first Play Included C.I.C. Advanced Facilitator training of the Brick-by-Brick Program at TransformED at Allegheny Intermediate Unit. The experience was invaluable, and I'm eagerly anticipating their visits to our future Brick Clubs!

The Dragon's Den: A Space of Wonder

One of the most impactful experiences of my trip was visiting the Dragon's Den. I'm deeply grateful to Clare, and Anthony, for sharing this space. I am still basking in. the joy from the visit.

Northgate Middle/High School: The Chill Project

At Northgate Middle/High School, Ash  and Jeff shared insights into The Chill Project-Allegheny Health Network's Mindfulness Program for Schools. Their horticulture, art, and carpentry programs affirmed my belief in the power of educators to create calming spaces and provide regular instruction to help students and community members better manage pressure and anxiety.

Innovation Hub: A Glimpse into the Future

I'm incredibly thankful to Matt, Jeff, and Anthony for guiding me through the state-of-the-art research facility at the former AGH Suburban Hospital. This innovation hub, home to AlphaLab Health, showcases cutting-edge work in healthcare and life sciences. I also  had the privilege of visiting fascinating and inspiring businesses like BotsIQ, Catapult Culinary Kitchen, and Tikkun Olam Makers.

Carnegie Mellon University Entertainment Technology Center (ETC)

The visit to Carnegie Mellon University's Entertainment Technology Center (ETC), founded by Randy Pausch and Don Marinelli, was a highlight of my trip. My hosts, John and Anthony, provided an amazing experience. Coincidentally, I was visiting Carnegie the week after the 17th year anniversary of Randy Pausch's viral Last Lecture. The ETC's exhibits perfectly captured our family's passion for LEGO builds and entertainment history, creating a nostalgic atmosphere while also sparking excitement for future world school excursions. This beautifully curated space served as a time capsule of creativity and innovation in the entertainment technology field.

Rebuilding and Healing, Brick by Brick

This journey has affirmed my belief in the power of play and creativity in rebuilding and healing mental health. As we continue our Brick-by-Brick journey, I'm reminded that it's never too late to rediscover oneself and embrace new opportunities. Each day presents a chance to grow, learn, and become the best version of ourselves – not just for our own sake, but for those we love.

LEGOLAND California 2015

With love and gratitude, I look forward to applying these experiences in our ongoing journey of growth and healing. Remember, it's never too late to start building your dreams, one brick at a time.
